CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Traveling back to London with my father and Captain Redmond after dinner should have been uncomfortable. I suspected I’d rather the trip had been embarrassing or painful rather than what it was. Boring. They replayed every hole of their match in excruciating detail. I would have taken a nap, but my father kept waking me up.

I arrived at the station in London with my nerves frayed. Redmond sent my father off in a cab and then turned to me. “Shall we head to Langston’s?”

We went to my flat to drop off our cases and Redmond’s golf clubs. I walked into the parlor and noticed Reggie’s address book on the desk blotter, not in the pigeon-hole where I kept it. Puzzled, I walked from room to room. The draperies were closed more than I had left them. The large pieces of furniture were slightly out of position.

“What’s wrong?” Redmond asked as he followed me about the flat.

“Someone has searched in here again. It wasn’t your people, was it?”

“No. Are you sure someone’s been here?”

“Yes.” At least they had left the place neater than they had the last time.

“Then the document or whatever is still missing and they’re certain Reggie had it.”

“I need to speak to Sutton.”

“Don’t bother. These men are professionals. They either told him they were here for another flat or they bypassed him completely.”

The safety of moving home appealed for about ten seconds until I thought of living with my father again.

When we arrived at Derek’s block of flats, I was the one who gave the doorman my name. He called Derek and then sent us up, his head already bent over his newspaper by the time we entered the lift.

As soon as we knocked, Derek opened the door. When he saw Redmond, his welcoming smile slipped away.

“It’s all right,” I told him. “Captain Redmond is helping me find out who killed Reggie. We have some questions. Is this a good time?”

He nodded and stepped back to let us in. I walked in first, slipping off my coat and gloves as I went into the parlor. Redmond pulled off his gloves and set them inside his hat as he followed me.

Derek parked himself in front of the mantelpiece, his eyes darting from one of us to the other. He wore a smoking jacket with trousers and plaid bedroom slippers, as comfortable-looking and unfashionable as Reggie looked in the evening in our flat. I immediately felt at home and a little sad.

“We’re trying to learn all we can about Mr. Denis’s last night. Did you see him at any time after, say, five in the afternoon?” Redmond asked.

“Will this help, Olivia?” Derek asked, looking at me.

“Yes. We’ve received more information, well, hints of information, that we think leads to Rggie’s death and that of another man. Anything, no matter how small, may help us discover the truth.”

He nodded, swallowed, and turned to Redmond. “I met Reggie for dinner at a chop house.”

“Was he already dressed for the evening when he arrived?” I asked.
